The View diva talks the samba and trying for baby number two.
Sherri Shepherd lived out a longtime fantasy when she kicked up her cha-cha heels on Dancing With the Stars this season, and has no regrets about participating despite her early ouster. Not only will The View co-host, Newlywed Game host and occasional 30 Rock star return to the ballroom for the season finale next week, she has some exciting stuff coming up, including exciting personal plans. She revealed those and reflected on her Dancing experience when we caught up with her at the Generosity Water fundraiser, which she co-hosted.
You were eliminated early on Dancing With the Stars, but are you glad you did it?
Absolutely! I’m still dancing. I love dancing. Every time I see Val [Chmerkovskiy, her partner], even if we’re in the middle of the street, he does the samba with me. I didn’t do any interviews after I got voted out because I was too emotional. I couldn’t do it without crying. It was tears of joy and sadness to leave my family there.
What was your biggest takeaway from the experience?
I found out that I had stage fright and I learned how to talk myself through it. I made the most lovely relationships, friends that I will treasure forever. And I found out about doing something that scares me. Facing my fears. And it really toned me, which I love!
Does your husband, Sal, like to dance?
Sal doesn’t like to dance as much as me. I love it. I’ve actually kept taking dancing classes.
Are you going back for the Dancing finale?
Yes, I will be there for the finale. I hope I get to do a Latin dance because I never got to do one.
What do you plan to do during your summer hiatus from The View?
I pitched a sitcom and I’m hoping to do a pilot for it. I will be auditioning for some other stuff; The Newlywed Game is coming back up on GSN, I’m working on a book, and I’m going on vacation with my husband. We’re gonna make another baby. I want to go to some little island for some baby making!
You had a difficult pregnancy with your first, Jeffrey.
Yes, he was born at five and a half months. I waited till later in life to have my baby and I’m so appreciative of him. It’s why I work a lot with the March of Dimes and premature birth.
What got you involved with Generosity Water?
I’m a long time friend of the founders, the Wagners — I taught Jordan in Sunday school. Anything they ask, I’ll do. They started really small and had to beg people to help fund one well. Last year they did $250,000 in wells. It’s really grown. I’ve seen video of the wells they built and the smiles on the kids’ faces. We have to stop taking water for granted.
The Dancing With the Stars two-night finale airs May 21 and 22 on ABC.
