Rihanna's action epic went down like the Titanic.
No amount of nautical puns will console executives at Universal Pictures about the sinking of their Battleship. The at-sea epic, starring Rihanna and Taylor Kitsch, went down faster than the Lusitania (sorry, couldn't resist) with a $25.3 million opening weekend. That's significantly less than producers were projecting — at least $35 million — the picture to make. Battleship cost over $200 million to produce.
The $226 million international take over the past three weeks certainly helps, but analysts are calling this a flop along the lines of Disney's John Carter — which, ironically, also starred Taylor Kitsch.
What's bad for Battleship is great for The Avengers. The superhero ensemble easily held on to the No. 1 spot and brought its worldwide gross to $1.4 billion, the fourth biggest in history.
Rounding out the top five are Sasha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, which did so-so domestically but overperformed outside of the U.S., Dark Shadows, which dipped a steep 57 percent to $12.8 million and What to Expect When You're Expecting, the ill-reviewed baby mama comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Chris Rock, debuted at No. 5 with $10.5 million.
The spring's breakthrough hit Think Like a Man held on to a spot in the top 10, coming in at No. 8 with $2.7 million. Its five week total comes to $85.7 million, making it a slam dunk for Sony's Screen Gems.
Next week, Men in Black 3 will determine if Will Smith still has what it takes to keep his box-office record.
