Michelle Rodriguez Says “Trashy and Black” Get Oscar Nods

Are her words false or painfully true?

In an interview that’s bound to have the web abuzz, actress Michelle Rodriguez offered some controversial thoughts on what it takes to win an Oscar.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Rodriguez, during a talk with Vulture.com, gushed about Nicole Kidman’s performance in the Lee Daniels-directed The Paperboy.

“I f-----g loved it,” the actress said. “One of my friends said, ‘She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar for that.’ I was like, ‘Nah, man. She’s not Black!’”

“I laugh, but it’s also very sad,” she reportedly continued. “It makes me want to cry. But I really believe. You have to be trashy and black to get nominated. You can’t just be trashy.”

There’s been much buzz about the steamy film centered on a reporter returning to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate.

While Rodriguez may have a point about what type of people get nominated for roles (think Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball or Mo’Nique in Precious), she has not clarified what she meant by such a statement.
