Michael Vick Wants to Own a Dog

The ASPCA sorely disagrees.

Michael Vick wants a dog, but the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) doesn’t think he deserves one.

In an interview with Piers Morgan, the Philadelphia quarterback said he’d like to get a dog for his children. In 2007, Vick, 31, was convicted for illegal dog fighting and served 19 months in prison. Upon his release, the NFL star was banned from owning dogs for three years.

With the ban about to expire, he says he wants his children to have a pooch.

“For the last three years, to not be able to have a dog because of my acts,” Vick said. “I don’t think that’s fair. It may be something that’s therapeutic in it for them, and I can’t take that dream away from them.”

But the ASPCA disagrees that Vick should ever own a dog. Shortly after the Piers Morgan interview, the agency spoke out against the football player.

"Vick’s journey toward rehabilitation,” a spokesperson told TMZ, "and redemption has not reflected any direct concern for the wellbeing of animals, and we’ve never heard him express a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed.”
