Vulture.com says the only woman of color worthy of rank in Tinsletown is Zoe Saldana.
These days Hollywood power lists are compiled as often as most people take out the trash. And the latest one assembled definitely smells a bit fishy.
Vulture.com put together its 100 Most Valuable Stars list and while male African-American luminaries Will Smith and Denzel Washington fared well at number 2 and number 4 respectively, Black actresses Halle Berry, Viola Davis and Queen Latifah failed to rank at all. Only Dominican-American actress Zoe Saldana earned a slot. Saldana, who was dubbed “The Eager Action Hero," barely clocked in at number 99.
The outlet looked at eight determining factors to compile their listing — a star’s domestic box office, overseas box office, studio value, likability factor, magazine and tabloid coverage and the critical acclaim of their films.
Using Vulture’s own measuring yardstick, the three Oscar-nominated actresses omitted have starred in several critically acclaimed movies, have crossover appeal, likability and get consistent magazine coverage. Berry, Davis and Latifah’s box office brawn may have come into question, but the trio should have at least earned a spot for qualifying in other areas. Saldana was most likely on Vulture's radar simply because she costarred in box office juggernaut hit Avatar.
To the contrary, Halle, Viola and Latifah are extremely valuable to us in Hollywood. Guess we'll have to consult a different list.
