Exclusive: The Ladies of Sparkle

Tika, Jordin and Carmen on Whitney, Aretha and Mary J.

Long before the musical Dreamgirls hit Broadway, the 1976 film Sparkle lit up the imaginations of a generation with its story of singing sisters striving to make it big in music. The original film, which starred Irene Cara as good girl sister Sparkle, Lonette McKee as sassy and tragic oldest sibling Sister and Dwan Smith as sensible middle child Delores, has been reimagined into an anticipated remake which also stars the movie's executive producer Whitney Houston.

The new version of Sparkle stars Jordin Sparks as the title character, Carmen Ejogo as sexy siren and cautionary tale Sister and Tika Sumpter as a smart, pre-feminist Delores.

Since the trio of actresses play a singing group in the film, BET.com got their take on all things music: Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Destiny's Child, The Supremes and more.

Sparkle arrives in theaters August 17. Check out the exclusive video interview below.
