Exclusive: The Men of Sparkle on Remaking a Classic

Derek Luke, Mike Epps and Omari Hardwick talk the new film.

In the 1976 original film Sparkle, Philip Michael Thomas played the role of devoted, aspiring music producer Stix, who was also love interest to title character. While Tony King, who portrayed violent street hustler Satin and Dorian Harewood as his right hand and underling, Levi, completed the love triangle for the affections of Sister.

The updated remake keeps Stix, now portrayed by Derek Luke, just as sweet, loving and driven as ever. But the 2012’s Sparkle also recreates Stix and Levi, as played by Omari Hardwick (a humble man without much means) as cousins. And the character of Satin got the biggest makeover of all. As portrayed by Mike Epps, he’s a successful standup comedian with an extremely dark side.

It all adds up to a trifecta of colorful and interesting male roles for the actors of Sparkle. Luke, Epps and Hardwick spoke to BET.com about what it was like playing these revised classic characters.

Sparkle opens in theaters August 17. Check out the video below for more with the leading men from the cast.
