Looks like The Hobbit has legs. Peter Jackson's 3D epic, the first in a trilogy, smashed records this weekend with $84.8 million at the box office, making it the biggest December opening in history. Will Smith's I Am Legend previously held the record, with a $77.2 million take on the same weekend in 2007. That film, however, didn't have the added boost of higher-priced 3D tickets.

Last week's Golden Globes nominations gave a boost to Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence's Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln. Steven Spielberg's antebellum drama took third place, followed closely by Skyfall. The latest in the James Bond franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

This Is 40, the sequel to breakout hit Knocked Up, hits theaters next week and Django finally comes unchained on Christmas Day.
