Box Office: Texas Chainsaw 3D Crushes Competition
In a month usually reserved for Oscar hopefuls at the box office, Texas Chainsaw 3D pulled off an upset. The latest in the slasher franchise, starring Trey Songz, topped the box office this weekend with a whopping $23 million, beating out both The Hobbit and Django Unchained. Unsurprisingly, teenage males turned out in big numbers to see the horror film.
While the top spot evaded Django once again, director Quentin Tarantino and stars Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington hardly have anything to worry about. Django pulled in an impressive $20 million during its third week of release, propelled by controversy, sparkling reviews and audience raves. The film is well on its way to becoming Tarantino's highest-grossing ever, a title previously held by Inglorius Basterds.
Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, so expect to see an expansion of nomination films in the theaters. But if high-brow fare is not your thing, there's always Marlon Wayans' horror spoof A Haunted House to keep us entertained.
