Tells reporters he would "never" soften his word choices to appease critics.

Quentin Tarantino may have been shocked when he nabbed a Golden Globe award for his Django Unchained screenplay, but he turned the tables on reporters during a backstage interview.

The controversial director used the N-word in front of a pool of reporters, soliciting audible gasps while making a point about the 100-plus times the word was uttered by his characters in Django.

"If somebody is out there actually saying when it comes to the word n*****, the fact that I was using it in the movie more than it was being used in the antebellum South in Mississippi, then feel free to make that case,” he reportedly said to the press. “But no one’s actually making that case. They are saying I should lie, that I should whitewash, that I should massage, and I never do that when it comes to my characters."

Tarantino addressed his critics, which include fellow filmmaker Spike Lee and comedian Katt Williams, by adding, "not one word of social criticism that's been leveled my way has ever changed one word of any script or any story I tell," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "I believe in what I'm doing wholeheartedly and passionately. It's my job to ignore that."

Django Unchained has been nominated for five Academy Awards and recently surpassed Inglorious Basterds to become Tarantino's biggest box-office film to date.
