Almost a week after letting the public know he loves and supports his openly gay son, Magic Johnson sat down for a candid interview with TMZ to discuss the matter. Specifically, the impact Earvin Johnson III will have on Black America, in the world of sports and in the Johnson family.

On the subject of the harsh criticism young Earvin received for strolling arm-and-arm with his partner, Magic explained: “It’s tough because what happens in our community, when you think about [it], religion comes into play. And so, that’s when he’s going to get attacked. But look, I don’t care who’s attacking my son, I’m going to still support him and still love him… As I told him, once he [decided] to come out, expect some of this. We knew this was going to happen.”

As far as what the issue means for the Black community, the NBA legend feels his son being “out and proud” will help others. “I think this going to be good for a lot of young Black people who want to come out,” he said. “[Earvin’s] going to be that symbol.” And his impact, Magic feels, will reach outside into other groups, like, say, the sports world. “I told EJ, ‘This is going to be bigger than you,’" he said. “We can’t see it now. You can’t see your impact, but you’re going to have [one].’”
