America loves a good sports movie and 42 is no exception. The Jackie Robinson biopic beat expectations and scored a $23.7 million opening weekend, easily beating out horror comedy spoof Scary Movie 5, which was the weekend's other new entry.
While 42 hasn't exactly been a home run with critics, audiences seem to really have embraced the PG-13 pic. The film, about the tumultuous start of Robinson's baseball career with the Brooklyn Dodgers, did best in Los Angeles, where the Dodgers now play. The fact that baseball season has just begun likely also helped pique interest.
Scary Movie 5 didn't scare up a first place finish, but it did reasonably well with a $15.2 million weekend and second place. The film stars Katt Williams, Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.
Next week, Tom Cruise's Oblivion, which topped the foreign box office with a whopping $61 million, opens domestically and will likely steal home from 42. In the mean time, check out our exclusive interview with Chadwick Boseman, who played Robinson in the pic, below.
