A part of American music history hit Broadway on Sunday and BET.com had a front row seat. We had our cameras at the red carpet premiere of Motown: The Musical and caught up with Detroit legends like Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and, of course, Berry Gordy.
"The songs were theatrical, they had a beginning, middle and end," said LMFAO's Redfoo, who also happens to be the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, while Star Jones admits, "I always wanted to be Diana Ross."
"Berry Gordy is the gift that keeps on giving," declared the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Gordy, whose autobiography is the basis of the musical, seemed thrilled to see his brightest stars reunited. "We were lucky," explained the music icon of his company's success. "You cannot find another Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson." He had equally kind words to say about the cast playing the Motown legends on the stage. "They are phenomenal. The guy who plays me knows more about me than I can remember!"
Motown: The Musical earned a whopping $1 million in previews, which bodes well for the musical's future. Check out more interviews with Motown legends at the show's premiere in our exclusive video below.
