Jason Collins' Ex-Fiancée: "I Remain Deeply Hurt"

The gay NBA player's ex speaks out.

Jason Collins became a hero when he shared his journey of coming out as gay, but the woman he nearly married four years ago is still waiting for an explanation.
Carolyn Moos, the ex-fiancée of the NBA player who made history as the first openly gay professional basketball player, is telling her side of the story in the August issue of Cosmopolitan. "I wish [Jason] could have been honest with me years ago," she begins. "He’s being hailed as a pioneer, but I believe true heroism is a result of being honest with yourself and with those you love."
Moos, herself a professional basketball player who was engaged to Collins for four years, recalls the moment the NBA player ended their relationship. "He told me, 'You may want to sit down.' His words didn't make sense to me. 'I'm just not sure,' he said. There were no tangible reasons, no explanations."
She had another "sit down" moment when Collins called her before making his big announcement to the world. "He left a message on a Sunday, saying, 'I have something important to talk about — please call me back,'" she recalls. "I was working and called the next morning. He said, 'Carolyn, I'm gay.' I was stunned. During all the years I had known him, I never would have guessed that he would come out as gay."
Moos claims that Collins had promised he would call her back to further discuss the shocking news, but never did. "I'm sad the media seems to be a higher priority," she says, but adds that she still holds out hope that her ex will reach out to her.
