It's love and basketball for the Oklahoma City Thunder star.
Despite rumors that he's been playing the field, NBA star Kevin Durant is clearly only interested in some one-on-one with fellow baller Monica Wright.
The NBA stars (Durant plays for Oklahoma City Thunder, Wright for the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx) got engaged over the Fourth of July weekend after Durant popped the question. Wright confirmed the news to a reporter after her team defeated the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday. The couple of nearly two years have kept their relationship extremely quiet, so much so that many believed last year that Durant was dating former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett.
The closest either has come to acknowledging the relationship is when Durant jokingly tweeted in 2011, "Maybe I need a basketball playing girlfriend … hmm lol." He added, "Monica Wright where r u (love n basketball)."
The reference to the 2000 film Love & Basketball goes deeper. Wright has the same first and last name as Sanaa Lathan's character in the film, also a female baller who falls in love with an aspiring NBA star. Wright also has the same jersey number (22) as her movie counterpart.
Love & Basketball writer/director Gina Prince-Blythewood was even inspired to tweet Wright after reading the news of her engagement. "Hey monica, had 2 reach out. wrote&directed Love and Basketball. can't believe u share my girl's name & you ball & you rock #22."
The couple has known each other since 2006, when both were recognized as players on the rise in the McDonald's High School All-American Game.
Durant is set to take his career to the next level after signing with Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports last month.
Congratulations to the couple!
