Plus, China loves Pacific Rim.
Denzel Washington is unstoppable. The veteran actor scored another number one at the box office this weekend with 2 Guns. The action thriller, also starring Mark Wahlberg and Paula Patton, earned $27.4 million and bested The Wolverine and Smurfs 2, which came in second and third, respectively.
Overseas, Pacific Rim seems on its way to blockbuster status. The monsters-versus-robots epic, starring Idris Elba, pulled a modest $95.6 million domestically but has fared much better internationally. This weekend, it became the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released in China. The film has grossed close to $300 million worldwide, bringing the megabudget film (it cost $200 million to produce, not including marketing costs) within spitting distance of profitability. Could that mean a sequel in the works?
Next week, Matt Damon's sci-fi actioner Elysium goes up against Jennifer Aniston comedy We're the Millers and Disney's animated Planes.
