The boxing champ says sorry for insult.
Laila Ali had some explaining to do with regards to her comments on some non-traditional baby names. The Web was abuzz after the female boxing champ made an off-colored comment criticizing celebrity baby names, such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West naming their new baby girl North West, and received a bit of a backlash, to the point where she needed to clear the matter up.
Radio personality Egypt Sherrod reached out to Ali to get her to explain the situation. Ali explained that the controversy all started at a charity event where she was asked her opinion on non-traditional and creative names. “Speaking very candidly and honestly as I always do,” she said, “… knowing how cruel the world is and the bullying, and you know, kids have to grow up and get a job one day, I did say that I think some of these name choices are stupid.”
In the process, she named Kim K. and Kanye’s child as one of the kids with an unfortunate moniker. “I do realize that it was a poor choice of words… and it wasn’t to single out Kim or Kanye. I actually mentioned a bunch of names, not just the name North. It was a general opinion to a question that I was asked.”
Realizing she made a not-so-great statement, she decided to go public with her apology, even saying she’d reached out to the famous couple to say sorry personally. There’s been no word whether or not they accepted the apology.
