Russell Simmons Developing Harriet Tubman Biopic

Media mogul makes amends after posting offensive video.

Russell Simmons found himself in hot water after he posted a video satire of Harriet Tubman making a sex tape with her master and has been apologizing for his lapse in judgment all week. While the NAACP and thousands of fans may still be mad at him, Tubman's family is not.
In fact, Tubman's descendants have asked Simmons to make a biopic about the Underground Railroad conductor. "The last few days I have been speaking to some of the direct descendants of Harriet Tubman,” Simmons tweeted. “They have not only accepted my apology but we agree that we should begin immediately to develop the story of Harriet Tubman.”

The hip hop mogul and Def Comedy Jam creator, who revealed he is also producing a mini-series on abolitionist Frederick Douglass, mused that "God works in mysterious ways."
It's a seemingly happy ending for Simmons, who drew the ire of thousands when he posted the video, which he has since taken down. "I’m a very liberal person with thick skin. My first impression of the Harriet Tubman piece was that it was about what one of actors said in the video, that 162 years later, there’s still tremendous injustice," he said in an apology issued on his website GlobalGrind.com.

He added, "I can now understand why so many people are upset. I have taken down the video. Lastly, I would never condone violence against women in any form, and for all of those I offended, I am sincerely sorry."
