The first big hit of the fall box office flew into town this weekend. Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, earned an astounding $55.6 million at the box office, making it the top October opening of all time and a career-best box office for each of its A-list stars.
With a $24 million overseas take, the Alfonso Cuaron-directed drama had a worldwide box office of $83 million. Gravity, in which Bullock and Clooney play astronauts left floating in space after their shuttle is damaged, is also a top contender for awards season. The film cost $100 million to produce and took years to concieve, but has already proven that it will have been worth the time and expense.
Runner Runner, the high-stakes poker drama starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, may not be able to say the same. The film was a certified flop, grossing just $7.6 million over the three-day weekend. The film, which also stars Anthony Mackie, couldn't perform despite it's star-powered cast and Leonardo DiCaprio as producer.
Next week, Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills goes up against Tom Hanks' Somali pirate thriller Captain Phillips.
