Box Office: Thor Thunders, 12 Years a Slave Still Strong

Steve McQueen's gritty drama expands nationwide.

Thor 2: The Dark World thundered into theaters this weekend and captured first place. The action epic, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, grossed $86.1 million at the North American box office, bringing its worldwide total to $327 million. Idris Elba also stars in the Marvel pic.
Jackass: Bad Grandpa followed in second place, with animated family film Free Birds in third andLast Vegas and Ender's Game rounding out the top five. 
12 Years a Slave dominated among specialty films in theaters this weekend, pulling in another $6.6 million as the film rolls out nationwide. The film continues to perform well due to incredibly strong critical reviews and deafening Oscar buzz.
