Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is one of the most anticipated films of the fall, and now we have our most extensive look at Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela.
The new trailer for the film features a number of powerful scenes of Mandela transforming from a peaceful civil rights leader into a man willing to do just about anything for the anti-apartheid movement. The clip is cut to the track "Runnin'" by MGK. We also see a brief shot of Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela.
Most notable, however, is Elba's pitch-perfect South African accent. While Mandela as a young man may be hard for audiences to recognize, Elba's transformation into the elder Mandela, whose face is known worldwide, even had the iconic leader do a double take. “He saw Idris Elba as the old Mandela in the Mandela prosthetics and he says, ‘Is that me?’” says producer Anant Singh, who showed clips of the biopic to the ailing South African leader. “And it was very cute and he smiled and laughed, so it was very good.”
