Forest Whitaker Talks Repentance, Black Hollywood

The Oscar-winning actor on the importance of "our experience."

Forest Whitaker is a rare actor whose A-list status hasn't deterred him from his commitment to Black independent films. A look at his work over the past year is a perfect example of his ability to balance mainstream success with indie street cred. He earned rave reviews and Oscar buzz for his title role in Lee Daniels' The Butler, produced the acclaimed indie hit Fruitvale Station and starred opposite Jennifer Hudson and Angela Bassett in Black Nativity.
The Oscar-winning actor and producer brings his talents to the dark thriller Repentance, also starring Sanaa Lathan, Anthony Mackie and Mike Epps. As a deranged man who turns to gruesome measures while grieving the loss of his mother, we see Whitaker as never before.
We sat down with the actor to talk about the thing he most repents (hint: it has to do with a long-lost love) and his dedication to Black independent films. "It's important to show our experience," he says.
Check out our exclusive interview with Forest Whitaker below, and catch Repentance in theaters starting February 28.
