Captain America: The Winter Soldier topped the box office for the third weekend in a row this Easter weekend, with an additional $26.6 million in ticket sales. The superhero sequel, starring Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie, has grossed more than $200 million domestically and $586.6 million worldwide to date.
Staying strong in the number two spot was the animated flick Rio 2, which brought in $22.5 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $75.4 million so far. In third place was the Christian film Heaven Is For Real, which collected $21.5 million in ticket sales for its debut. The film had nearly double the gross of Johnny Depp's Transcendence, which brought in only $11.5 million from 3500 screens. This makes the third flop in a row for Depp, who seems to be struggling to find an audience in his post-Pirates of the Carribbean career.
The horror spoof comedy A Haunted House 2 rounded out the top five with $9.1 million — less than half the opening weekend box office take of the first film.
Next week, Brick Mansions (starring the late actor Paul Walker) goes up against girl power rom-com The Other Woman, which stars Cameron Diaz and Nicki Minaj. Will beginner's luck be on Nicki's side for her debut role?
