The monster movie reboot, starring Aaron Taylor-JohnsonBryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen, far exceeded expectations and earned the second biggest opening of the year behind Captain America: Winter Soldier. It's a career-starter for director Gareth Walker, who was given the chance to helm the big budget bonzanza after winning raves for his modest-budget debut, Monsters.

Coming in second place was Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, which brought in an additional $26 million, for a $91.5 million total so far. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew GarfieldEmma Stone and Jamie Foxx, fell 54 percent to take the third spot with a $16.8 million gross.

Rounding out the top five were Jon Hamm‘s Million Dollar Arm and female-centric comedy The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz and with a cameo appearance by Nicki Minaj, which brought in $10.5 million and $6.3 million, respectively.

Next week, Godzilla will face a worthy opponent in X-Men: Days of Future Past, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Halle Berry, while Blended will attempt to knock Neighbors out of the top three.
