Box Office: Maleficent Charms, Neighbors and Godzilla Stay Strong

Angelina Jolie's dark fairytale tops with $70 million.

Angelina Jolie can still bewitch the box office. Maleficent, which stars Jolie as the evil queen from Sleeping Beauty, topped the weekend box office with a $70 million gross, becoming the actress' biggest box office success to date.

X-Men: Days of Future Past held strong to second place. Featuring a star-studded cast of Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry and more, it brought in an additional $32.6 million for a domestic total of $162.1 million so far.

Seth MacFarlane‘s new film, A Million Ways to Die in the West, can be branded a bomb. The western-themed comedy came in third with a paltry $17.1 million, just one-third the take of McFarlane's lower-budget hit Ted two years ago.

Rounding out the top five were Godzilla and the new Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler comedy Blended, which brought in $12.3 million and $8.84 million, respectively. Godzilla's domestic total comes to a whopping $174 million, making it one of the biggest hits of the summer so far.
Next week, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow will attempt to steal Maleficent's magic, while indie tearjerker Fault in Our Stars will go for the anti-blockbuster crowd.
