After spending years in development at various studios, the biopic on gangsta rap trailblazers NWA seems to now be on the fast track into theaters. Universal, the company producing the film, released the first cast photo from the biopic, titled Straight Outta Compton.
The image features O'Shea Jackson Jr., son of the film's producer and NWA founding member Ice Cube, who has been cast to play his father in the film, alongside newcomers Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E. The young stars pose in front of Cube, Dre (also a producer on the film) and director F. Gary Gray in the portrait.
Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like a Man Too) and Eazy-E's widow, Tomica Woods-Wright, round out the producing team. The film is scheduled to go in front of cameras this year and has been given an August 14, 2015, release date — a slot originally slated for the next film in the Bourne Identity franchise.
