Box Office: Hercules Can't Defeat Lucy

Scarlett Johannson's thriller tops with $44 million.

Scarlett Johansson is immune to bad reviews. Lucy, which stars the blonde bombshell as a mentally-superior transhuman, opened to a whopping $44 million this weekend, topping the box office and easily beating out mythical epic Hercules

Morgan Freeman also stars in the sci-fi action film, directed by Luc Besson. Despite mostly negative reviews from critics, audiences — especially women — came out in droves for the film.

Hercules, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), came in second place and took in $29 million for its first weekend. The film was not a flop by any stretch, but studio executives were certainly hoping for more from their hefty investment.

Taking the third spot was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, starring Andy SerkisKeri Russell and more, which brought in an additional $16.4 million, for a domestic total of $172.1 million so far.

Rounding out the top five were the horror flick The Purge: Anarchy and the animated sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue, bringing in $9.9 million and $9.3 million, respectively.

Next week, the James Brown biopic Get On Up goes head-to-head with Zoe Saldana in Guardians of the Galaxy.
