Box Office: Ninja Turtles Triumphs Over Guardians of the Galaxy
Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and the Guardians crew were no match for Turtle Power this weekend.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles easily dethroned Guardians of the Galaxy for the top spot at the box office this weekend, grossing a healthy $65 million. While the figure didn’t come close to Guardians’ $94 million opening, it did exceed expectations.
The film, starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett, performed so well that two sequels have already been ordered.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, meanwhile, fell to second place but still earned a respectable $41.5 million for a domestic total of $175.9 million so far. The film set the record for August releases last week.
In third place with a not-too-shabby $18 million was Into the Storm, and rounding out the top five were the adult dramedy The Hundred-Foot Journey, starring Helen Mirren, and Scarlett Johansson's Lucy, which grossed $11.1 million and $9.3 million, respectively.
Next week, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and an entire ensemble of golden oldies will attempt to prove they still have what it takes to top the box office in The Expendables 3. Plus ,Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. will make us laugh while fighting crime in Let’s Be Cops.
