American Sniper took aim, fired and blasted to the top of the box office for the third weekend in a row. The Oscar-nominated film earned another $31.8 million in ticket sales, despite the stiff competition of Super Bowl Sunday.
The Clint Eastwood-directed film, starring Bradley Cooper as the Navy SEAL credited with the most kills in U.S. military history, has earned nearly $250 million domestically.
Family film Paddington came in second place with $8.5 million, followed extremely closely by third place Project Almanac, which earned just a few thousand dollars less.
Rounding out the top five are Black or White, starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer, with $6.5 million and Jennifer Lopez's The Boy Next Door with $6 million.
Another box office record was set this weekend. Crowd-funding platform Indiegogo announced that Sundance award winner Dear White People, which raised its initial production funds on the site, had broken the U.S. domestic box office record for a crowd-funded film. Since its opening on October 17, the comedy has grossed $4.4 million domestically.
Next week, the Wachowski's (Cloud Atlas) debut their latest sci-fi extravaganza, Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis.
