Bobbi Kristina Brown had to undergo a tracheotomy this week after spending twenty days in a medically-induced coma on life support. A source tells Us Weekly that it is a "normal procedure after a certain amount of time on a breathing tube." It's meant to prevent infections, which, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, can develop when bacteria is allowed to enter the lungs through the ventilator.
The music scion was hospitalized after being found facedown and unresponsive in a tub at her Georgia home on January 31, and has remained in critical condition ever since. Though Brown's doctors reportedly see little hope the 21-year-old will pull through, family sources say her father Bobby Brown refuses to pull the plug out of his religious beliefs.

Brown's lawyer, however, has warned against trusting the updates from family members on his daughter's condition. "Various members of the family have provided media interviews; however, none of them are approved visitors to see Bobbi Kristina," the attorney said last week.
"None of them have firsthand knowledge of Bobbi Kristina's treatment," he added, "and the medical staff at Emory University Hospital has not communicated with them."
The circumstances surrounding Brown's hospitalization are being treated as a criminal investigation, with her boyfriend Nick Gordon at the center of the inquiry. Police say that there were unexplained marks found on Brown's body the day she was admitted.
