Mara Brock Akil on Mary Jane Paul: 'There's Hope in Her'

The Being Mary Jane creator talks to Tai Beauchamp about the latest episode.

Being Mary Jane is one of the most talked-about shows on television, and now we're talking about it with show creator Mara Brock Akil. As part of Covergirl's Color Commentary series, stylist Tai Beauchamp sits down with Akil to discuss the latest episode of the hit series.
Beauchamp and Akil discuss the meaning behind the show's opening sequence, in which Gabrielle Union's Mary Jane Paul is vacuuming in an attempt to "clean for the cleaning lady." Akil contends that the behaviour is revealing of Paul's need to present a put-together version of herself to the world.
Akil also talks about her leading lady finally reckoning with her strained relationships — both with Nichelle and David — and which scene from the episode had her crying in the edit room.
