Box Office: Pitch Perfect 2 Blows Past Mad Max: Fury Road
The race for the top spot at the box office this weekend came down to boys versus girls, and in this case, girls rule. Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to the 2012 musical comedy hit, landed in first place with a whopping $70.3 million. The vast majority of ticket buyers were female, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, the critically-acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road brought in a respectabe $44.4 million from mostly male moviegoers. The rated-R film stars Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy and Zoe Kravitz in a small, but very memorable role.
Avengers: Age of Ultron fell to third place but still added another $38.8 million to its pockets, bringing the film's domestic total to $372 million. Rounding out the top five are Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara's disastrous Hot Pursuit, with an additional $5.7 million, and Furious 7, which adds $3.6 million.
Next week, George Clooney's Tomorrowland and off-season horror remake Poltergeist will go for the top spot.
