Taye Diggs Heads to Broadway for Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Taye Diggs is about to take his groove back to Broadway. The veteran actor will join Hedwig and the Angry Inch in the title role (of Hedwig, not the Angry Inch), it was announced on Monday. Diggs will be the first Black actor to play the part, taking over the role from Darren Criss for a 12-week run starting on July 22.
The actor, best known for movies like The Best Man and a long-running stint on Shonda Rhimes's Private Practice, actually got his start on Broadway as Benny in the original production of Rent. He also appeared in Wicked in 2004. Diggs is also, of course, recently divorced from Broadway queen Idina Menzel.
The role of transgender rocker Hedwig, with his signature blonde wig and gold ankle boots, is a bold one for Diggs, but we don't doubt he's ready to push his boundaries creatively after spending nearly a decade in suits and scrubs on his various TV shows. Time to set those rock hard abs free!
