Box Office: The Rock Shakes Things Up With San Andreas

Disaster movie scores $53.2 million opening.

The Rock don't stop! Dwayne Johnson is the king of the summer box office, scoring his second huge hit of the year with San Andreas. The disaster film made a whopping $53.2 million at the box office this weekend, easily taking first place. The film did even bigger numbers overseas, taking $60 million outside of the U.S. for a worldwide gross of $113.2 million.

CONTROVERSIAL MOVIE CASTINGS

Pitch Perfect 2 came in second place with an additional $14.8 million in its second week of release, followed by Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson, which earned $13.8 million, for a total so far of $63.2 million.
Rounding out the top five were Mad Max: Fury Road and Avengers: Age of Ultron, which grossed $13.6 million and $10.9 million, respectively.
Not so good news for the romantic dramedy Aloha, starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone and Rachel McAdams, which bombed in its debut with $10 million for sixth place.
Now that school is out, multiplexes are about to get very crowded. Entourage, Jurassic World and Insidious: Chapter 3 are just three of the new offerings this week. One of them is sure to dethrone San Andreas, but which one will it be?
