Magic Johnson probably knows better than anyone what Charlie Sheen is going through right now. The NBA legend, who announced to the world that he is HIV-positive back in 1991, offered a few encouraging words to the former Two and a Half Men star, who confirmed on Tuesday that he was diagnosed with the disease several years ago.
“I wish @CharlieSheen and his family the best,” Johnson wrote. “With the advancement in treatments and medicine he can fight this disease and live a long life.”
After going public with his own diagnosis, the former Lakers star has been an advocate for those suffering from the disease, creating the Magic Johnson Foundation and working with the United Nations to make HIV a chronic condition rather than a death sentence.
Indeed, Johnson has played a major part in helping de-stigmatize HIV. Now, he hopes Sheen will pick up the baton. “In @CharlieSheen breaking his silence, I hope he joins me in educating the world about HIV/AIDs,” Johnson tweeted.
