Zoe Saldana has maintained throughout the controversy surrounding her film Nina that she has nothing but love for Nina Simone, but the feeling definitely is not mutual — at least when it comes to the late jazz legend's estate.
After a fresh round of backlash over her portrayal of the music icon came down upon the release of the poster and trailer for Nina, Saldana evoked a few powerful words from Miss Simone to address the hate. She was then quickly shut down by the official Twitter feed of Simone's estate:
Though it's not immediately clear who controls Nina Simone's Twitter account and posted the message, it wouldn't come as a surprise if it was the singer's daughter Lisa Simone Kelly, who has been openly critical of the "totally unauthorized" biopic for several years.
Last year, upon the release of Netflix's Oscar-nominated documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? (of which Lisa Simone Kelly is an executive producer), she stated that Nina "has been full of non-truth since its inception. And the addition of Zoe Saldana to the casting — for me — was only a further example of how much this project really just veered away from what the truth was.”
Zoe has had to defend playing the role of Nina Simone for nearly three years now, and it seems like it's only just beginning. Watch the actress talk about the backlash in our exclusive interview below:
