There's a Major Update on the Waiting to Exhale Sequel

Twenty years later, it may finally be happening.

Fans have been waiting 20 years to see the women of Waiting to Exhale reunite on screen, but the death of Whitney Houston in 2011 put those plans on hold. Just as we had lost hope of a sequel to the classic film, Loretta Devine reveals that one is actually in the works.
“They’re still writing on it, for all we know," Devine tells Hollywood Today Live. "Everything happened so quick because Gregory [Hines] passed and then Whitney passed and it’s like you can’t start a movie with two funerals and they were like the key characters and so everything just sort of got scattered after that, but I think [writer] Terry McMillan is still trying to make it happen.”

According to Devine, the whole cast is excited to reunite for the sequel, and even Houston had been looking forward to it before her tragic death. “Oh God, everyone would be on board. Whitney was even like, the last time I talked to her, ‘Oh God, I can’t wait. I’m going to get myself together to do this’, and it just didn’t happen,” she said.

She also shared some interesting information about who could, in theory, replace Whitney Houston in the film: “Oh, they have so much new, young, great talent so it would be limitless girls that could do it.”

Of course, there's really no replacing Whitney, in cinema or in life. Relive the icon's incredible and tragic journey with Kim Burrell on Lift Every Voice, below:
