In a couple of days, "American Gangster" comes out. Unfortunately, many people didn't wait for the film's release to check it out.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that rampant bootlegging of the film was taking place in many urban cities, including Washington, DC and New York City. While I understand that movie tickets cost $10 apiece and with concessions factored in an evening for two could cost most Americans $30. That's not even counting if you need a babysitter.
On the other hand, Hollywood is ruled by the dollar. If the film doesn't open well, then it's not that American Gangster was a bad investment, the perception is that Black Gangster movies are. When that perception, in some eyes becomes fact, then there are less movies made, more Black actors out of work and ultimately it is you the filmgoer who suffers.
Would you buy a bootleg version of the film or watch it when it comes out in the theaters?
