Oscar Winner Robert DeNiro, fresh off critical raves in "Righteous Kill," is going back to his roots, so to speak.

According to WENN, DeNiro will team up with his "Goodfellas" director Martin Scorsese to explore the New York underworld in a new gangster flick.

The film, based on the book "I Heard You Paint Houses," will have DeNiro playing a real-life mobster called Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran.

Sheeran was a mafia assassin reputed to have carried out 25 murders; his victims are rumoured to include Teamsters union boss Jimmy Hoffa, who disappeared in 1975.

Charles Brant, who wrote the book, befriended Sheeran before his death in 2003. Brandt claims Sheeran confessed a number of killings, including Hoffa's.

WTF thinks DeNiro is a great actor and gangsta. But is he the baddest mob cat out there? If not, who is?
