A film about survival in the Mississippi Delta was one of three films that earned six nominations each when the picks for the Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday.

"Ballast" tied with "Frozen River" and "Rachel Getting Married" for best feature of the year. Directed by Lance Hammer, who also got a nod for best director and best first screenplay, "Ballast" follows the story of a single mother and her troubled son trying to make the best of their challenging lives on the Delta. It all goes south, however, when they find themselves in a major conflict with a store owner after a violent act brings them together.

In addition to the aforementioned nominations, "Ballast," which won two awards at Sundance, also earned nods for:  Tarra Riggs as best female lead, JimMyron Ross for best supporting male and Lol Crawley for best cinematography.
