Exactly 17 years ago today, Poetic Justice opened in theaters nationwide.  At the time, urban dramas were all the rage due to films like John Singleton 's Boyz N The Hood Poetic Justice was Singleton's first movie since the Oscar-nominated blockbuster and this time he was armed with some celebrity heavyweights -- Janet Jackson and 2Pac .

Janet played a poet named Justice, who was struggling with grief when she comes across a cocky post office clerk named Lucky . Soon, she is on a ride up the Cali coast with his best friend and her best friend, played by the true standout in the film, Regina King .

Poetic Justice was picked apart by critics, but it still ended up grossing over $27 million at the box office and received an Oscar nod for Best Original Song for Janet's "Again."
