I don't know about you but I loved Ricky Gervias
as the host of the Golden Globes. It seems like uppity Hollywood is not familiar with insult comedy. However, this has been part of the urban comedy tradition for decades. Harlem's Apollo Theater is infamous for mocking its crowd and performers, BET's own
would have comedians tearing up innocent folks in the audience, and if a celeb was in the house at HBO's
Def Comedy Jam
then they'd get a stab too.
Of course one of the best host monologues ever was Chris Rock
's at the MTV Video Music Awards. He mocked J-Lo
's booty, chopped up Ricky Martin
, wore out R. Kelly,
and if the celebs were upset -- Rock probably would've ripped them up more.
Sure, people say, "This is the Golden Globes!" Please! This is not Kennedy Center Honors - this is an awards show with folks liquored up. Golden Globes, VMAs, Oscars -- it's all the same thing and you need a good host to spice it up. This means next year they are going to have some bland and boring host.
Ricky Gervais took to his blog and said he will not host the Globes again by his choice - but that rumors of him being fired or reprimanded are "garbage." He also added, "
Thanks to the twitterverse, the blogosphere, all the journos and the coolest stars for coming to my rescue. It was heartwarming to realise I wasn't losing my mind. Some reactions nearly had me believing I'd gone too far too. Nearly. Can't wait for the people who thought it was over the top to see my stand-up shows. F**k me, they will s**t themselves."
I might just have to get a ticket!
