Posted Oct. 16, 2007 -- All the hip trendsetters are stepping out in leg-lengthening black opaque tights. From Rihanna to Alicia Keys, dark and patterned hose are adding the extra ladylike quality every fashionista needs in her wardrobe.

Mimi Merkin, leg wear design director for HUE, recommends using the stockings as a layer under this season's sweater dresses and plaid skirts. "The black opaque is the perfect fall accessory and pretty much goes with everything these days," Merkin says. She advises wearing control-top or heavy opaque tights under knits (to counteract lumps and bumps) and trying a thigh-high version for maximum comfort. And don't think tights are just for daytime. Pairing evening dresses (the metallic ones too!) with tights, to create a polished head-to-toe look, can take you from the office to a night on the town.
Want to add a bit of punch to a pair of flats and a short skirt? Bright- or grey-patterned and textured tights can create quite the sophisticated look.
Brightly colored tights: Consider these an accent, so don’t go bright-color crazy. The wilder and bolder the stockings or tights, the less wild the rest of your outfit should be. Set off the bold look with shoes and clothes of neutral shades. However, there’re a few exceptions: Suedes, velvets, even subtle tweeds, can work wonderfully with bold hosiery.
Patterned tights: Look cool and break the monotony of an all-black or gray outfit with a jazzy pair of artistic stockings. For ultra-chic results, try paisleys, geometric shapes or stripes, but resist the urge to mix them with other patterned items. To achieve an extra-dressy look, go for something with a lil’ shine or sparkle.
Thick and heavy stockings: Save these for the wintry months and give a more unique look to work clothes or a skirt suit. Opt for thigh-highs and save yourself from the itchy discomfort.
Seamed stockings: With skirts or dressy dresses, you nearly can’t go wrong with these sexy stockings. Haute, slimming and classy are all words that come to mind when describing seamed stockings.
Fishnet stockings: Worn alone they’re so last, last year. Over solid colors for an unexpected and cool effect is very much in. Avoid wearing with a mini skirt because it might come off trashy. Instead, a safer bet is with tall boots and a skirt that cuts knee-length or shorter.
So no more excuses! Put up with the itching for a few hours of sweet sophistication.
