Style Profile: Po Johnson of La La’s Full Court Life

La La’s bestie is making her own moves with a funky new single and style to match!

Most know Po Johnson as La La Vazquez-Anthony’s spunky best friend on the VH1 show La La’s Full Court Life. But these days Po is striking out on her own and launching a music career. Her lyrics come to life in her first single, “Super Kinda Psycho Sexy Love” (currently available on iTunes), a pop/rock infused track that gives a good feel for Po’s spirited personality. Read on to learn more about the up-and-coming singer.
BET: What made you want to go from doing reality TV to launching a music career?
Po:
Music is something I’ve always wanted to do, writing is something that I wanted to do. I started writing when I was, like, four because I used to have a bad stuttering problem…because of that I never really spoke to anybody. I would write on the wall in my bedroom and my mom would let me do that because she saw it as me expressing myself.
I spent a lot of my life building up the courage to be who I am and exactly who I wanted to be and that’s a big part of it. La and I would be out hanging out and she would be like ‘I don’t know what you want me to introduce you as. I don’t know if I should introduce you to people as a musician and actor or if you want me to tell people you work here. I don’t know what you want me to say.’ And that kind of stuck with me because it made me think about what it is that I wanted to be. I realized I wanted to use my voice and be an artist.
BET: Describe your musical style.
Po:
My first single, “Super Kinda Psycho Sexy Love,” was kind of pop-y punk with some funkiness in it, and some urban. It’s greatness I think. It started out with just the sound, but I am working on the album and I wanted to go on tour with it. I like that sound for now, but at the same time I don’t want to put myself into a box. So I have no idea what I’ll want to sound like two years from now or even two weeks from now.
BET: What inspires your fashion style?
Po:
Tina Turner inspires a lot of my hairstyles. My mom had a VHS of one of her concerts and when I saw her moves, and her performance and her hair — I thought ‘oh my god I think I can do this!’
I would call my style a freedom style. I try to illustrate whatever it is that I feel. Freedom of creativity. I don’t know if that makes sense. Someone once asked me, ‘what are you thinking about when you get dressed? Why would you put on that color and that color and that color?’ And I thought, well I don’t know, it just made sense to me. I’m an eccentric person, but again I wasn’t a communicative person when I was younger, so I tried to express myself in different forms of art: writing, drawing and to me getting dressed is another form of art. That’s how I show people who I am.
BET: Do you ever raid La La’s closet?
Po:
Oh my god, yeah! I do! In fact, if we wore the same size I’d be in a different place, but we don’t. She catches me sometimes, but don’t get it twisted because La La will try to steal my stuff too! If I have a piece she likes or an accessory, she’ll try to take it in a second. But she always has great accessories and great bags. Sometimes I’ll look at what she has around and be like ‘what are you going to do with that?’ A couple weeks ago I tried to take one of her jackets, but it didn’t quite go like I planned. It was crazy and I really liked it, but she saw me and was like 'where are you going with that?' She’ll always catch you! Believe it or not she knows every single thing that’s in her closet.
BET: What’s coming up next for you?
Po:
Well, I’m going to do a video for my single “Super Kinda Psycho Sexy Love.” My EP will be coming out soon so everybody look for that. And I guess my last words would be ‘always be inspired and if you’re not inspired, be inspiring.’
