Estelle covers the January 2012 issue of London's Evening Standard magazine and the British singer looks stunning dressed in a red, slinky floor-length gown paired with a fabulous necklace. The 32-year-old also rocks outfits by Gucci, Lanvin and Diane von Furstenberg through the six-page fashion editorial.
In her candid interview, Estelle talks about growing up as an awkward, timid girl into the ballsy woman who walked up to Kanye West to demand he hear her sing. The "American Boy" singer explains how her faith has kept her strong, but also how hard it's been to perform her latest single "Thank You," a jazzy track written by Akon, because of a painful breakup with a mysterious keyboard player.
“When I first met him, I asked him not to mess with me. I asked him to be 100 percent with me. Please! Three years down the line he did the exact opposite. [Her eyes flash with tears again. Her voice is croaky]. So ‘Thank You' is about growing up, turning into a woman and not being bitter. Not being angry at myself for choosing the wrong guy.”
She heard the song just weeks before she and her boyfriend broke up after a three-year relationship, which makes the track an emotional reminder of that moment.
"(When I heard it) my heart started pounding. My chest hurt. And guess what? Two weeks later I broke up with this guy. And now I can't sing it without crying. It's my life. It's a mess," she says. "I've never cried on stage before. But every time I sing 'Thank You' the tears are ready to come. I'm not going to do that ugly face in public. OK, I am...."
Estelle's new album, All of Me, will drop February 28.
