Mary J. Blige has certainly transformed her image since first busting onto the scene in 1992 and the proof is not only evident through her music, but her style as well. In the February/March issue of Vibe, the magazine's cover girl talks about how she perceives herself, beauty and her expanding career.
"I've evolved, I'm a woman now, and I've softened. I've been a tomboy my whole life. But then you get older, you get married, you soften up. You still have that other exterior if needed," she says.
"When I'm made up and dressed up and my heart is in the right place…," Blige says on when she feels the most beautiful. "I'm not going to lie and say I feel beautiful when I have on a hair scarf and I'm running to the gym. I feel confident, but beautiful? No."
The singer, who executive produced and stars in the Lifetime movie Betty & Coretta, based on the lives of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King, also talks Rihanna, who has garnered the appreciation of the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul herself.
"I am so proud of what Rihanna is doing. She is speaking to her generation, and she's living her life in front of them. I don't even think she is purposely doing it. She's such a beautiful girl, and I don't think she knows she's that beautiful," Blige says. "She's just living her life, and leading her generation, and she has great, great songs."
The February/March issue of Vibe will hit newsstands Feb. 19.
