A$AP Rocky: They Can't Say That I'm Not Handsome
In a recent shoot for Mr. Porter's Music Issue, A$AP Rocky chats about his personal style and what he thinks about rappers' fashion sense — or lack thereof. The 24-year-old rapper, who wears Burberry Prorsum, Oliver People's shades, and other high-fashion styles, says, "I have a Rolex, but no diamonds. Rappers wear diamonds to compensate for a lack of fashion sense. I don't even have pierced ears — I'm not into that, it's too much."
A$AP, who's rumored to be dating model Chanel Iman, notes that his love for clothes started early and around the same time he developed an interest in rap.
"At the age of eight I started getting into fashion, brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica and Ralph Lauren," he says. "But in 2005 I started wearing John Richmond jeans. I was into Prada and Dolce & Gabbana at the time and that's why I started to wear tight jeans, because I wanted to be a model. I started to do freelance work for Calvin Klein so I was slim and it just stuck."
But the "Purple Swag" singer says that his regard for high fashion has resulted in others questioning his sexuality, a comment A$AP simply brushes off his shoulders.
"You know why they say that? Because they can't say that I suck, they can't say that I'm not handsome, and they can't say that my lyrics are wack, so they say that I'm gay because they don't have anything on me," he says.
Still, as much as he loves consuming fashion and staying stylish, don't expect an A$AP Rocky clothing line popping up in stores anytime soon. The rapper says he has no plans of getting into the industry or using his influence to expand into fashion like many of his peers have.
