Jean Touitou reveals that the three-piece capsule collection took two years to make.
If you were deluded enough to think that working with Kanye West on his latest fashion endeavor was a breeze, think again. According to A.P.C. designer Jean Touitou, working with the rapper was a bit of a nightmare. Not only did West nitpick at every detail, but it took the group two years to finalize the designs. That's two years for a pair of jeans, a hoodie and a T-shirt.
"It took us two years to create just three items... Kanye has strong obsessions and wants to go in so many different directions — basically, he wants to redo the whole universe," Touitou said. "When we finally finished this collection, I felt like, Okay, if I made this happen, then I can achieve peace in the Middle East."
In another interview with GQ, Touitou recalled his first meeting with West, who initially went by the name "Kenny," and how the music star sought fashion advice from the French designer.
"Over two years ago, a visitor to the A.P.C. studio was announced to me as 'Kenny.' He wanted my advice on the fashion industry; although I found such a request quite vague, as a mutual friend introduced us, I met with the guy. The guy talks, talks and talks and I was having a good time listening. He had nice manners and spoke about losing his mother in a surgery accident, about losing his girlfriend too, and about how difficult doing the right thing in fashion was," Touitou said.
Eventually the pair became friends and decided to create a "small" but "precious" capsule collection, which will be released July 14.
