Commentary: Is J. Lo Vain or Insecure?

A new interview sheds light on her body image issues.

Has Jennifer Lopez taken her role as judge, the position she holds on American Idol, a little too seriously? Perhaps. That could explain why she told British Glamour, "Some people find it comforting to sit down and eat a whole pint of Häagen-Dazs, but honestly that would make me throw up."

Before the ice cream eating world puts down their spoons and rises up to ask the singer who she thinks she is passing judgment on their snacks, they might want to consider Lopez's relationship to her body and food. She has spent a lifetime denying herself the pleasure that comes from saying f-it to the joy that can be found inside a pint of Häagen-Dazs. In exchange, she has shown superhuman discipline and exercised herself to a body that has been oohed and aahed over by millions.

It is this kind of adoration which the singer wants. And, it seems, needs. Although she claims she's calmed down with age, Lopez lives under the spotlight. If she gains weight, a paparazzo will make thousands of dollars selling photos of her extra poundage. If she gains lots of weight, she'll be subjected to seeing entire segments of television shows, not to mention blogs, articles and a Twitter explosion, dedicated to her girth. It's the pressure that the average woman faces times a gazillion. And Lopez is determined not to be anyone's body snarking punching bag, which explains why she also told Glamour "that very ambitious, determined girl inside me is like, 'Come on, let's be in the best shape ever and really show everybody.'"

And that woman can't get to her goal with a pint of ice cream...no matter how much she'd want it.
