Nicole Richie is forever inspiring us to try new things with our look. (Hello, lavender locks!) But the fashion designer admits that her own hair routine is painfully simple.
“I had been wearing extensions for about 10 years, and I just decided, you know what? I don’t want anything in my hair anymore,” she says in an interview featured in Elle's April issue. Opening up about her worst-ever fashion mistakes, including shaving off her eyebrows as a teen, the self-professed “jeans and T-shirt” girl says she relies on protective hairstyles to nurse her locks back to health.
“After I took out my extensions, first of all, my hair was so short — this was this summer — and I knew that I had to make it thicker and...get it healthy, so I was piling leave-in conditioner in my hair. And I was thinking, 'What am I going to do?' And then I was like, 'F*** it. I’m just going to rock a slick-back and put conditioner in my hair,’ and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past six months," she says. "And after I took out my extensions, I just kind of felt, like, more free."
The designer, whose House of Harlow 1960 fashion line launched its first-ever clothing collection this week, admits that her pared-down mane routine aligns with her style philosophy as a whole. "I’m not a person who can wear a ton of makeup, or a ton of hair, or a big gown. It’s just not me. And I have never felt better, I’ve never felt more confident."
